How to Build & Wire a DIY Engine Run Stand | Step-by-Step Wiring Guide

Testing an engine on the ground or dropping it directly into a project car without knowing if it runs is a huge gamble. Building a dedicated engine run stand gives you a safe, controlled environment to check oil pressure, set initial timing, trace electrical connections, and catch leaks before final installation.

In this guide, we walk through how we modified a standard engine stand and wired up a complete 12V control panel—including a master disconnect switch, fuse block, push-button ignition, and electric fuel pump—to test-run our Small Block Chevy 350.

Step 1: Modifying the Engine Stand Frame

We started with a heavy-duty engine stand from Harbor Freight as our foundation. To turn a basic engine stand into a functional test rig, you need to add structural support for accessories, a battery, and a control panel.
  • Cross-Bracing & Supports: We welded up custom steel brackets and ran cross-bracing using bolts and self-tapping screws. Upward steel tubing with triangular gussets adds rigidity to prevent frame flex when the engine torques over.

  • Battery Tray: We welded a steel grate across the lower frame, giving the heavy 12V battery a secure, flat resting spot near the starter.

  • Radiator Slots: The frame uprights include slotted channels to mount a radiator and shroud for extended test runs.

  • Gauge & Switch Mount: Angled steel tabs welded near the top allow a custom wooden or metal control panel to sit at eye level.

Step 2: Essential 12V Electrical Components

To wire an engine run stand safely without risking electrical fires, set up a centralized power distribution and fusing system.

  • Battery Master Disconnect Switch: Cuts all power to the stand instantly in an emergency.

  • Ignition Switch Panel: Controls main 12V power toggles and features a push-button start.

  • 12V Fuse Box / Breaker Block: Distributes fused power to individual accessory switches.

  • In-Line Fuse Holder: Placed between the battery circuit and control panel for added safety.

  • 12V Micro Electric Fuel Pump: Supplies steady fuel pressure from a temporary gas can directly to the carburetor.

Step 3: Step-by-Step Wiring Sequence

Wiring an engine run stand is straightforward when broken down circuit by circuit:

Starter Power & Disconnect: Run your heavy-gauge positive battery cable directly to the main starter solenoid post. From the starter post, run a hot feed up to the Battery Master Disconnect Switch, placing an in-line fuse along this feed.

Fuse Box & Toggle Panel: Connect the output side of the Master Disconnect directly to your 12V Fuse Box. From the fuse box, run dedicated hot leads to the bottom terminals of your control panel toggle switches.

Ignition & Push-Button Starter: Wire the main ON/OFF toggle switch to a terminal junction. Split this feed so it supplies 12V switched power to your HEI distributor (or ignition coil) and to one side of the momentary push-start button. Run the output of the push-button through a relay directly to the starter solenoid S-terminal. The video below shows this part a lot easier than me trying to add pictures.



Switch & Control Panel Grounds: Splice the ground wires from your toggle switches and push-button indicator lights together and run them to a single grounding point on the stand frame.




Electric Fuel Pump Circuit: Run a fused hot lead from your accessory switch down to the positive terminal on the 12V electric fuel pump. Ground the pump’s negative wire cleanly to the metal frame.



Main Engine Block Ground: Attach a heavy-gauge ground cable directly from a clean, unpainted spot on the engine block (or starter mounting bolt) straight to the negative terminal of your 12V battery.



Pro-Tip on Cooling Accessories: If you add an electric radiator fan or electric water pump later, route their power through temperature-activated relays so they engage automatically as the engine warms up.
